Bans Smoking In BUDDHA

Share on :

In the Buddha's teaching is not explained on the prohibition or prohibited permitted laws regarding smoking. Even in the teachings of the Buddha one is free to choose what will they make food, be it vegetables, meat and other foods as long as it is not self-destructive and harmful to others. Important food consumed simply to survive in the long term. On this the Buddha once said, "All living things relies on food."

Before the rise of Buddhism, there are many Brahmins and ascetics who believe that holiness can only be achieved by regulating the closely what they eat. Based on the view that they only eat rice and vegetables in very small amounts. In fact, often times they do not eat anything. They believe that in this way, a sort of self-mortification, purity can be achieved. The Buddha rejected the concept of purification by similar way because according to Buddhist teachings Buddhist food is important even though only consider food as the fulfillment of basic needs only, not excessive and is not destructive.

The Buddha recommends to all his disciples to practice Dhutanga. Dhutanga literally interpreted as an exercise to destroy defilements. The Buddha advised them to be controlled in terms of food and beverages and various other types of consumption due to the Buddha is merely a basic food and not excessive.

During the life of the Buddha, the Pali Canon (Pacittiya Pali, Vinaya Pitaka) mentioned that there are five types of food commonly served as a daily menu and also ordinary didanakan to the monks, namely rice, rice porridge, boiled wheat, fish, and meat. Apart from the above five types of food, also listed nine types of food that more special, the food is mixed with melted butter, fresh butter, oil, honey, molasses, fish, meat, milk and curd. The types of foods are considered the Buddha as a food that is able to meet basic needs for human beings to be able to establish a sacred devotion (Apannaka Sutta, Anguttara Nikaya) with great simplicity, with the provision of consumption is not excessive.

In the teachings of the Buddha, a monk is supposed to consume foods that meet some specific requirements are strict, ie foods that are not for the purpose of enjoyment, not to get a special power, not to develop part of the body to appear attractive, and not to beautify themselves. But it should be just for survival, health care, and allow them to be able to run a holy life (Apannaka Sutta, Anguttara Nikaya). Another thing that is important from the teachings of Buddhism is that you must train yourself to eliminate berupayakan clinging to the taste of the food you eat everyday.

Thus, it is clear smoking is forbidden in the teachings of the Buddha from smoking do not meet at least two types of consumption requirements taught by the Buddha, which is not the purpose of pleasure and not to gain special powers. The first condition is not met in cigarettes due to smoking and physical condition of the human body will experience a craving that causes momentary sense of pleasure and especially damaging overall physical condition. The second condition is not met because the smoke usually people feel more manly, confident, feel they have something that raises a special power, although sometimes only a mere suggestion.
